Patrick Leahy, who by all appearances is temperamentally less inclined than his counterpart John Conyers to play chicken with the White House, looks as if he's reached his breaking point.
It may be because of that somewhat high threshold for nonsense that Leahy is seen generally as less of a partisan than Conyers. To some extent, having a reputation for moderation must be to his benefit in the current imbroglio. If the perception is that even the accommodating, august Patrick Leahy has reached his breaking point, then something must be seriously wrong.

I'm closer to the BarbinMD post at dKos on whether Leahy has teeth or just will gum this issue until Jan 20, 2009.
He quotes Leahy as saying: When the Senate comes back in the session, I'll bring it up before the committee.
Wooooh! I'll bet that scared the stuffing out of the White House.
Some of the comments at TPM Muckraker are worth a read (and laugh or tear).
My favs: Leahy: "I'm through messing around. I'll give you five more warnings and then there's gonna be trouble. If you haven't responded to the fifth warning, oh, brother--I'll give you such a warning...!"
...
But this new September deadline is different. This time he really means it.
